We are looking for an experienced textiles conservator to join Te Papa’s Conservation Team.

Te Papa has active acquisition, loan and touring programmes and a regularly-changing exhibition programme for a large number of galleries.  Textile conservators are involved in all these areas, supporting the full appreciation and accessibility of textiles from the History, Maori, Pacific, Art and Natural Environment collections.

The Conservation Team of ten includes objects, textiles, paintings, paper and preventive conservators.  The two textile conservators also work closely with collection managers and curators and with mountmaking and transit preparators.  The conservation labs and workrooms are spacious and well equipped, and a central collections information system, KE EMu, is used to manage collection processes and documentation.

A recognised professional conservation qualification and minimum of  5 years’ experience as a conservator in a Museum/Art Gallery environment is essential for this position.  You will enjoy working co-operatively with other museum professionals, improving the well-being of a collection and finding creative solutions to making collections accessible in safe and culturally-appropriate ways.  Te Papa is a bicultural organisation - our conservators need to be able to explore culturally- sensitive solutions to conservation issues and respect cultural and community values.

You will be interested in both contemporary and historic collections and the materials from which they are made.  Preventive conservation is important at Te Papa, but remedial conservation is also an essential part of the role.  With such varied collections, it will be useful to bring a range of remedial conservation techniques and demonstrate an ability to draw on new approaches. Experience in working with taonga Maori and Pacific heritage items would be an advantage.
