Hi Pippa
I am having a problem sending this email. As the address I took off the original keeps bouncing back. Could you do a direct reply to him and just paste my response in? If that fails I am not sure how to get in touch with him. Let me know if it works.

Thank you

Nicky

Dear Mr Ezzeldeen
Thank you for your enquiry about resins and residues found on Ancient Egyptian Mummy wrappings. The most successful methods for characterising residues on Mummy Wrappings are Fourier Transform Infra Red Spectroscopy (FTIR) and Gas Chromatography Mass spectrometry (GCMS). The most common resins found on Ancient Egyptian Mummy wrappings are outlined in the the Resins chapter of:

Nicholson, P.T and Shaw, I (eds). (2000).  Ancient Egyptian Materials and Technology, P.T. Nicholson and I. Shaw (eds), Cambridge: Cambridge University Press.

However, much of the staining to be found on Mummy wrappings is found to be a mixture of resins and body fluids.  I must stress that it would not be considered an ethical treatment to remove either resins or body fluids from Mummy wrappings. I would consider any original residues on Mummy wrappings to be integral to the integrity and authenticity of the object.

I hope this answers you questions.

Yours faithfully
