Museum Textile Services announces that its 2006 workshop will take place from January 18-27 in and around Lima, Peru. This informal, hands-on conservation course is geared toward students, professionals, and others with museum sensibilities and good sewing skills who want to learn about textile conservation and pre-Columbian cultures while seeing the beautiful country of Peru. The goals of the 2006 course are to document, conserve, and mount tie-dyed archaeological textiles from the site of Huaca Malena (huacamalena.perucultural.org.pe). Working together with Peruvian students, archaeologists, and conservators we aim to learn from each other and to advocate for the care and documentation of this collection. The workshop is limited to ten non-Peruvian students and four Peruvians. Spanish is not necessary. Cost (not including air fare) is $700 for single accommodation or $600 for double, and includes ground transportation, tuition, and guides. Students will also be asked to purchase and bring approximately $25 in conservation supplies for use and donation.
