NATCC 2005 Mexico City Update

Title: NATCC 2005 Mexico City Update

The NATCC (North American Textile Conservation Conference) Board met in Mexico City last week to plan for the November 2005 NATCC meeting "Recovering the Past: The Conservation of Archaeological and Ethnographic Textiles".  The meeting will be held in Mexico City at the National School of Conservation, Restoration and Museology "Manuel del Castillo Negrete" (ENCRyM)and the National Museum of Anthropology of the Instituto Nacional de Antropología e Historia (INAH) on November 9 - 11, 2005.

The Board selected papers representing authors from 12 countries. The papers will be given in either English or Spanish with simultaneous translation into English/Spanish.  Conference preprints will also be bilinqual. (If you submitted an abstract for consideration, you will shortly receive an email about whether it was accepted.)

The conference will be preceeded by optional tours and workshops on November 8 and 9 and followed on November 12 by an optional tour to Teotihuacán.  The Comité Nacional de Conservación Textil, which is based in Chile with members from many South American countries, will hold its meeting in Mexico City the same week.  Attendance at that meeting is open to all who wish to attend; no prior registration is necessary.  This will be the first time textile conservators from North and South America will converge for meetings.

The NATCC Board is thrilled that the 05 meeting will be in Mexico. For many of us on the NATCC Board, this was our first trip to Mexico City and we cannot wait to return next year.  It is a beautiful city, with great weather (a plus for us Northern folk in November!), and so much to see.

The local committee has selected a wonderful hotel with lots of character,  all the amenities, and a great conference rate. It is in the Zona Rosa, a vibrant neighborhood with lots of restaurants and shops, convienient to the historic and museum districts.

Board Chair Lorena Roman and Vice-chair Judy Gomez were incredibly welcoming.  Their hospitality for the Board meeting was just a preview of what they will do for all NATCC participants next November.

Look for a "Save the Date" postcard and the opening of the NATCC website in January.  The registration materials will be available in Spring 2005. We look forward to seeing many of you in Mexico City!
