I myself work with Filemaker since years (now version 7.0). It is extremely useful, very versatile and easy enough so non-specialists can handle it. Access is a - for non computer-specialists - more complicated database and most time people get less out of it. With Access you would have to structure your future database right at the beginning. Filemaker allows for more easy adaptations later on. If you are looking for other means of looking at "levels" of objects: I work successfully with Photoshop to *visually* document various aspects of an object in layers. By playing with various combinations of layers, interesting insights can often be gained. Please contact me offline if you wish further information on any of these programs.
