UNIVERSITY OF CAMBRIDGE
MUSEUM OF ARCHAEOLOGY & ANTHROPOLOGY
Temporary Museum Assistants ? World Textile Collections
(£15,778 ? £19,378)
Following a successful application to the Designation Challenge Fund, the
Museum wishes to appoint two or more temporary Museum Assistants for up to
eighteen months - one full time and one or more part-time (up to 60% pro
rata). The project will involve the reorganisation, repacking, research and
documentation of the Museum?s collections of textiles and costumes from
around the world (over 4,000 objects). Objects will be photographed and
enhanced documentation added to the Museum?s database. Particular research
attention will be focused on the Pacific textiles, including several hundred
barkcloths from Western Polynesia. The project will extend visual and
documentary access to the textile collections through enhanced on-line
provision and temporary displays in the Museum.
Applicants must have previous experience of working with relevant Museum
collections and have a practical knowledge of professional standards for
collections care and documentation. A relevant degree in anthropology,
museum studies and/or related subject would be advantageous. Computer and
database skills are essential. Knowledge of File Maker Pro, Adobe
Photoshop and digital photography would be beneficial. Expertise in some
area of world textiles is highly desirable. The successful candidates will
be self-motivated and able to work independently as well as part of a team.
Further information about the Museum?s collections, including an on-line
catalogue, is available at <http://museum-server.archanth.cam.ac.uk>
Applications, including a detailed covering letter, CV, and the names and
addresses of two referees, should be sent to the Museum Secretary at the
University of Cambridge Museum of Archaeology and Anthropology, Downing
Street Cambridge CB2 3DZ by the closing date of 1 June 2004. Interviews are
scheduled for 15 June and it is hoped that the successful candidates will
take up their positions as soon as possible thereafter.
