[padg] FLICC Preservation Institute: A Cooperative Program

FLICC Preservation Institute: A Cooperative Program

Gain preservation knowledge from the experts! In partnership with the Library of Congress Preservation Directorate, Lyrasis, and the Northeast Document Conservation Center (NEDCC), the Federal Library and Information Center Committee (FLICC) presents a course in preservation for libraries and other cultural heritage institutions geared toward working professionals. The program has three components:

Part I
As an introduction, participants take Preservation 101, a self-paced online course created by NEDCC which covers the basics of preserving print, electronic, and other media. In addition to learning about the nature of library materials and what makes them vulnerable, you will gain knowledge about environmental monitoring and control, digital reformatting, disaster planning, and setting priorities for preservation. LC staff are on call for consultation while you are taking the course. A live online forum for discussion will be offered the first week in August.

Part II
The centerpiece of this three-tier program is the week long Introduction to Preservation Practices at the Library of Congress, taught by Preservation Directorate staff. From August 17 through 21, 2009, learn how theories are put into practice in the oldest and largest United States library preservation operation, and have an opportunity to tour the various preservation facilities at the Library of Congress.

Part III
The third part of the program is a series of Online courses from Lyrasis (formerly Solinet and Palinet), a leader in providing preservation training and service to libraries and other cultural institutions. You will learn to apply preservation principles and processes in your institution and explore special topics:

On-demand, self-paced courses, take anytime between August 24 & December 31, 2009:
- Audiovisual Preservation on a Shoestring Budget
- Under Construction! Preservation Concerns during Construction and Renovation
- Mammoth Materials: How to Preserve Posters, Maps and More

Live-online courses, to be held on dates listed here (all are three two-hour sessions):
- Developing a Disaster Plan, September 16, 23, and 30, 2:00pm - 4:00pm
- The Educated Consumer: Evaluating Preservation Products and Services, October 6-8, 10:00am - 12:00pm
- Managing and Preserving Digital Materials, October 14-16, 10:00am - 12:00pm
