[padg] Re: Cleaning soda from books

Title: Re: [padg] Cleaning soda from books
Hi,
I haven’t seen any follow-up posts to the list, so I’m not sure if anyone has been in touch .

The problem with soda is sugar, and the only to deal with sugar, really, is water. I would try a damp rag, and then stand the book up to dry thoroughly. Even if the book is covered in a starch-filled cloth (the dye runs and the cloth spots when wet) daubing up the sugar with a damp cloth will lift the sticky off—you will still have spots, but at least they won’t be sticky. Another possible strategy could be to run the damp cloth over the entire cover, so the discoloration is equalized. For circulating library books, if the problem is really bad, it can be easiest/cheapest just to have the library binder rebind the book.

If the problem is on a rare/special book, a conservator could locally wash out the spots of sticky soda under magnification and then perhaps use a touch of color to minimize the disfiguring appearance of the spots.

All best,
Shannon

Subject: [padg] Cleaning soda from books

Does anyone have recommendations for cleaning soda that has been sprayed onto the outside covers of books?
Thank you,
Dorothy Warner
