Richard: This are my dreams: That some funding be set aside for the
preservation of intellectual and cultural items. Many military
libraries have historic materials that should be preserved for future
generations.
Another item would be a DoD contract for Disaster Assistance. All
military libraries are self insured. It would be great to set up
regional contacts for Disaster Assistance in case of a fire, flood,
terrorism or whatever. Katrina pointed out the need for looking beyond
the institution and what happens when the entire infrastructure is gone.
Sources to work with world be the FLICC Disaster Planning WG which is
getting off the ground and local state emergency planners. Other sources
would be LC, NARA, Heritage Preservation and Northeast Documents
Conservation Center which has developed a dPlan for institutions to
create their own Disaster Plan. I am finishing one on Disaster Planning
for Cultural Institutions within the Military.
Another area would be a DoD contract for databases/e-books for military
libraries. Many are small and do not have access to funding for a
wealth of databases/ e-books. Some of this has been created by the
Army, Air Force and the Navy but it is small. Another example is MERLN
at NDU. It is a collection of resources and online catalogs using
OCLC's World Cat. http://merln.ndu.edu
Good Luck in your effort.
