[padg] ALA Program - Microfilm to Digitization Roadshow

Apologies for cross-posting.

Does your Institution possess precious treasures on microfilm (or fiche)?

They may be in danger of deteriorating. They may be the only surviving copy of
the content.

Do you want to know how to protect these treasures through duplication? Have
you considered making them accessible via digitization?

What better way to find out than to join us for our roadshow discussion about
how to access, select and convert your microform treasures to digital format.

Come hear what characteristics make microfilm a hidden treasure waiting to be
transformed in to digital assets. Whether you're familiar with your
institution's microfilm collection or not, microfilm is something you may want
to consider when planning your next digital project.

Join us for:
Microfilm to Digitization Roadshow: Hidden treasures in the vault
at ALA Annual 2008 in Anaheim, CA hosted by the OCLC Preservation Service
Centers:

Sunday, June 29, 9:00 - 10:30 AM
Hilton Anaheim, La Jolla Room

The program will showcase the ins and outs of selecting microfilm and present
case studies of the planning and completion of two microfilm-to-digital
projects:
Nebraska Public Documents project; University of Nebraska-Lincoln
Presenter: Katherine L. Walter
Co-Director, Center for Digital Research in the Humanities
Chair, Digital Initiatives & Special Collections Dept.

and

Digital Library of the Caribbean project (dLOC); University of Florida
Presenter: Laurie Taylor
Digital Projects Librarian, Digital Library Center

Representatives for both projects will explain the key objectives and
methodologies they applied in selecting their microfilm collections and
completing their transformation to digital images. OCLC Preservation Service
Center staff will present key technical guidelines for evaluating your
microfilm collection and highlight options for scanning and processing the
digital images.

We hope to see you there.
