[padg] Preservation w/Mark Roosa @ CALRBS Summer 08
Need to learn more about Preservation? Looking for a once in a
lifetime educational opportunity this summer? There's still time to
enroll in California Rare Book School's course "Preservation
Stewardship" taught by Mark Roosa, Director of the Pepperdine
University Library.
The course will cover the physical characteristics of library
materials, factors affecting their preservation, assessing needs and
setting priorities,
and the development and management of a balanced preservation program.
Special emphasis will be placed on the role of science in
preservation, conservation,
reformatting endangered materials, and safe exhibition methods.
Participants will also visit libraries, preservation departments, and
laboratories in the Los Angeles area including the Getty Conservation
Institute, the UCLA Film and Television Archive and the Huntington
Library.
Preservation Stewardship of Library Collections is being taught by
Mark Roosa; a leading authority on the preservation of library
materials. From 1992-1998 Mr. Roosa served as the Lloyd E. Cotsen
Chief Preservation Officer at the Huntington Library where he
developed and directed a comprehensive program for the Huntington's
extensive collection of works of art, rare books, manuscripts,
photographs, and non-print resources. From 1998 to 2004 he was
first the director of the Library of Congress's conservation
division and then Director of the Library's comprehensive program of
preservation. Since 2004 4 Mr. Roosa has been the director of the
Pepperdine University Library.
Tuition for CALRBS is $995 per course. Course size is limited to 15
students and admission is conducted on a rolling basis. Scholarships
are available for students enrolled in an accredited university.
