Preservation Asst V - Assistant Book Conservator ? 07437

The Cornell University Library Preservation and Collection Maintenance department is seeking an Assistant Book Conservator who will be responsible for the conservation treatment of rare and unique library materials contained in the Native American collection. The collection encompasses more than 4,000 rare books, several significant manuscript collections, as well as photographs, artwork, and related materials. Under the direction of the Book Conservator and following professional standards, the Assistant will carry out complex conservation treatment consisting of: analysis and replication of historic structures, conservation of paper and parchment via aqueous and chemical treatment, re-sewing in a variety of styles, leather and vellum rebinding/binding restoration, gold and blind tooling, and construction of clamshell boxes and other enclosures.
 
This is a two-year grant-funded position.

Qualifications
Bachelors with 2-4 years experience or equivalent combination.  Extensive knowledge of book and manuscript conservation techniques as evidenced by: degree/diploma in conservation, and/or apprenticeship completion certificate, and/ or other verifiable certification of advanced training and education. Expertise in leather binding and restoration. At least one year of experience beyond training.  Excellent oral and written communication skills.  Candidates will be asked to submit a portfolio. Preferred: Minimum of two years experience beyond training in a conservation facility.
