[PADG:1119] Archives Conservator position- Georgia Archives



ARCHIVES CONSERVATOR

The Georgia Archives, a division of the Office of Secretary of State, is looking for an innovative, energetic and service-oriented archives conservator.  In May 2003, the Georgia Archives moved into a state-of-the-art facility in Morrow, Georgia, fifteen miles south of downtown Atlanta.  In 2005, the National Archives-Southeast Regional Branch opened adjacent to the Georgia Archives.  This first co-location of state and federal archival facilities in the nation has stimulated usage at both archives.  For more information about the Archives, please visit www.GeorgiaArchives.org

 

DESCRIPTION OF DUTIES

 

Under general supervision, the archives conservator manages the daily activities of the document conservation laboratory.  Supervises and/or performs complex treatments on rare and unique archival materials in accordance with the AIC code of ethics.  Develops and monitors work procedures for the unit, establishes priorities, makes treatment decisions.  Works closely with imaging and micrographics operations to ensure that conservation standards are being met.  Assists the preservation manager in outreach and educational programs, preservation planning and surveys, emergency response and environmental control.  May supervise the work of interns, students or volunteers assigned to assist with conservation tasks.

 

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION

 

This is a full-time position with excellent benefits including annual and sick leave, 12 paid holidays per year, insurance (group health, dental, vision, disability, accidental death, life, and legal), retirement plan, deferred compensation plan, and credit union eligibility.  Hiring salary range is $35,000-$40,992 depending on experience.  The State of Georgia is an Equal Opportunity Employer.

 

QUALIFICATIONS

 

Required:  Advanced degree in Conservation, Library Science (from ALA-accredited program), or related field with specialized training in conservation.  One to three years of related experience in a conservation lab setting.  Demonstrated skill in the complex treatment of paper based collections including the relevant chemistry and conservation theory.  Excellent communication and decision making skills, and attention to detail.  A portfolio of recent conservation treatment is required.  Preferred:  Current knowledge of preservation operations and issues in an archives setting including preservation reformatting.  Experience in exhibit preparation.
