THE NORTHEAST DOCUMENT CONSERVATION CENTER IS STILL ACCEPTING REGISTRATIONS
FOR ITS FALL 2005 PRESERVATION WORKSHOP SERIES.

The one-day workshops will be held at NEDCC, 100 Brickstone Square, 4th
floor, Andover, MA.  Workshops are open to all.  Early registration is
strongly recommended for all workshops due to limited class sizes.

NEDCC's Fall 2005 Preservation Workshop Series Dates:

BASIC BOOK REPAIR
Wednesday, September 28
Instructor: Lori Foley, Director of Field Service, NEDCC

This course is designed to provide both information about managing a book
repair program and hands-on experience in basic book and paper repair
techniques for general library collections. Participants will learn to mend
tears, tighten loose hinges, and tip in and hinge in loose or replacement
pages.


IDENTIFICATION AND CARE OF PHOTOGRAPHS
Wednesday, October 5
Instructor: Monique C. Fischer, Senior Photograph Conservator, NEDCC

This workshop, an introduction to the preservation of photographs, will
focus on historical photographic prints, including their identification,
deterioration, and conservation. Participants will learn to recognize
various photographic formats and will study the preservation problems
associated with each format type.


INTRODUCTION TO DIGITIZATION
Thursday, October 6
Instructor: David Green, Principal, Knowledge Culture Consulting

This course will give newcomers the tools they need to best position their
institution in the evolving digital ecology. What are the key questions to
be asked throughout the process of digitizing cultural material? Discover
the ways to make resources most visible, useful, and sustainable for a wide
universe of potential users.



HOLDINGS MAINTENANCE
Wednesday, October 19
Instructor: Aimée Primeaux, Field Service Representative, NEDCC

Holdings maintenance involves simple procedures that can prolong the life of
records. These actions, such as upgrading boxes and folders and removing
metal fasteners, can be incorporated into the daily work of an institution's
staff. This workshop will examine ways to implement a successful holdings
maintenance program at minimal cost.


BASIC PAPER REPAIR
Thursday, October 20
Instructor: Christopher Sokolowski, Assistant Paper Conservator, NEDCC

This course will introduce participants to the basic procedures of paper
conservation and their place in a comprehensive preservation program.
Participants will be given hands-on experience with handling, surface
cleaning, mending, flattening, and encapsulation. Popular repair techniques
to avoid will be discussed, and a materials and suppliers list will be
provided.
