Etherington Conservation Services
 
Etherington Conservation Services (ECS) is a conservation facility that
handles bound material and works of art on paper from institutions and
private clients across the United States.  The Book Lab at ECS completes a
range of conservation work from collections maintenance to Bible repair to
fine conservation binding, including new bindings for such works as the
Kelmscott Chaucer and bound volumes of the letters of Thomas Jefferson.
ECS's Paper Lab has completed conservation treatments on such varied works
as original 19th Century block printed wallpaper, double elephant Audubon
illustrations, and photographic materials.
 
ECS invites applicants for the position of Assistant Book Conservator.  The
individual will join the fifteen-member staff of the Book Conservation
Department and assist with conservation treatments, examination, and the
preservation initiatives of client institutions.  The opening is a full-time
position in our regional conservation facility in Greensboro, North
Carolina, USA.
 

Responsibilities: The Assistant Book Conservator is responsible for the
treatment of a wide variety of bound materials, including incunabula, period
bindings, modern firsts, and albums, in bindings of leather, vellum, cloth,
and paper.  Excellent hand skills are required.  The candidate must be
capable of guiding a project from inception to completion: handling initial
consultation with clients, compiling time and cost estimates, and
determining and completing the course of treatment as well as producing
documentation adhering to current ethical standards.

 
Qualifications: Master's degree from a recognized conservation training
program with a minimum of three years post-graduate experience in
bookbinding and conservation; or a comparable combination of professional
training and experience treating bound material is desired.  Good verbal
skills and an ability to work collegially in a regional conservation
environment are prerequisites.  Knowledge of preservation theory, standards
and ethics of conservation practice, and historical book structures is
required.
 
Skills should include:
    *   precision hand-skills
    *   attention to detail
    *   knowledge of bookbinding materials, tools and equipment
    *   ability to safely handle fragile books and paper objects
    *   ability to work efficiently while maintaining conservation
        standards
    *   ability to work in a group environment
    *   excellent communication skills
    *   ability to meet deadlines and assist in coordinating
        workflow
   
Salary commensurate with experience.
