[PADG:380] job announcement - University of Hawaii at Hilo - Head of Public Services

LIBRARIAN II, III, or IV: position number 83792, full-time, 11-month,

general funds, to begin approximately September 1, 2004, pending position

clearance and availability of funds.

DUTIES:

Leading Public Services personnel (consisting of three librarians, six FTE

support staff, student assistants, and volunteers), the Head of Public

Services is responsible for the overall management, operation, long-range

planning, policy / procedure development and documentation, and assessment

of the following services:

. Reference

. Library Instruction

. Access Services

. Library marketing/publicity

. Library environment

. Web site content/design

. Distance learning support

. Hawaiian Collection

. Archives

In addition, this position:

1. Has direct responsibility for library marketing/publicity, including

writing public services-related communications to the campus.

2. Serves on the reference desk, including evenings and weekends.

3. Serves on library, university, and UH system committees.

4. Performs assigned collection development responsibilities.

5. Teaches library instruction classes, especially in disciplines related to

collection development responsibilities.

6. Works with other library units to provide seamless services and access.

7. Assists with resource generation through grant writing and/or fundraising

activities.

 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

Rank II: ALA-accredited MLS or international equivalent.

Rank III: ALA-accredited MLS or international equivalent, 24

post-baccalaureate credits in addition to the MLS, and at least three years

of appropriate experience.

Rank IV: ALA-accredited MLS or international equivalent, second masters

degree in a subject area in addition to the MLS, and at least seven years of

appropriate experience.

Minimum qualifications for post-baccalaureate credit and years of

appropriate experience for rank are non-negotiable.

DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS:

1. Strong preference will be given to candidates with management experience

in academic public services as a librarian, including implementing effective

user services initiatives.

2. Excellent oral and written communication skills.

3. Proven and successful ability to work effectively with colleagues in a

team-based environment, supervise and mentor staff, and resolve personnel

issues.

4. Proven and successful experience and skills in:

a. Bibliographic instruction

b. Providing innovative reference services (including electronic reference)

c. Access Services (circulation, reserves, interlibrary loan)

d. Writing promotional literature and creating student resource materials.

5. Knowledge of:

a. Best practices and current trends in the provision of excellent library

public services

b. Teaching methods and instructional design for information literacy

c. Technological trends for electronic public assistance.

6. Demonstrated ability to work effectively with students, faculty, staff,

and colleagues in a multicultural environment.

7. Proven ability to solve problems creatively, negotiate, and handle

stressful situations in a positive manner.

8. A strong undergraduate and graduate academic record.

9. Experience with developing and assessing academic public services through

performance measures focused on student outcomes.

10. Experience with grant writing and fund raising.

PAY RANGE:

Librarian II: $33,948-$51,264

Librarian III: $39,708-$62,364

Librarian IV: $48,312-$78,924

Annual salary ranges are firm.
