University of Illinois Library at Urbana-Champaign
Position Available:
February 16, 2004. This is a full-time, regular, Academic Professional
position in the University Library.
Duties and Responsibilities:
Reporting to the University Archivist, this full-time Academic Professional
position assists archivists with daily operations and assumes a leading
role in the provision of reference and public services for the University
Archives and its historical manuscript collections. The incumbent will
oversee the reading room, supervise student assistants, and perform typical
archival functions including arrangement and description. Specific
responsibilities may include:
· conducting reference interviews and providing access to archival
materials
· interpreting access and records policies for users
· arranging physical transfer of materials
· retrieving archival records and manuscripts for users
· supervising and hiring students
· preparing exhibits
· documenting policies and procedures
· arranging and describing specific collections
· developing/maintaining content in finding aids and web pages

The University Archives provides services to undergraduates, graduate
students, faculty, the public and visiting scholars. Its extensive
holdings relate to the University history, personal papers of prominent
faculty and alumni including John Bardeen, Avery Brundage, and James B.
Reston as well as the archives of organizations such as the American
Library Association and the Ad Council. The Archives staff includes 5
archivists, 10 graduate assistants and 3 student assistants. The
University Archives is responsible for major collections of international
status relating to student life and culture and to John Philip Sousa and

Qualifications:
Required: Bachelors degree in humanities, social science, or related field;
experience with bibliographic and research techniques; ability to
communicate clearly in person and in writing; demonstrated ability to work
systematically and accurately; respect for the confidentiality of records
and the research needs of users; ability to exercise independent judgment
and participate in group/team endeavors; demonstrated experience with
office automation applications; proficiency in use of the Internet and
Library on-line catalogs for bibliographic searching; and physical ability;
must be able to lift 30 pound boxes to a height of 6 feet.
Preferred: Undergraduate specialization in history, political science or
journalism; graduate coursework in history or library science; prior
employment in an archives, manuscripts repository, or library; supervisory
experience; and demonstrated knowledge developing and editing web pages.
Salary:
Salary is competitive and is commensurate with experience and credentials.
Terms of Appointment:
Twelve month appointment; 24 work days vacation per year; 11 paid holidays;
12 annual sick leave days (cumulative), plus additional 13 days (non
cumulative) per year if necessary; health insurance, requiring a small
co-payment, is provided to employees (coverage for dependents may be
purchased); participation in the State Universities Retirement System which
includes several private options including TIAA-CREF, is compulsory upon
appointment; newly hired university employees are covered by the Medicare
portion of Social Security, and are subject to its deduction.
