A final reminder regarding nominating a colleague (or colleagues) for the
Esther Piercy Award. Nominations are actually due 2 December (the 1
December deadline mentioned in the original text below is a Sunday) and
should be sent to Diane Perushek, committee chair (perushek@xxxxxxxxxx).
To provide full information about the award and qualifications, I'm
resending the full announcement I posted back in September. Please note
that the phrase "a librarian with not more than ten years of professional
experience" translates as "not more than ten years experience since
obtaining a library degree."
Please contact me with any questions.
Thanks,
Robin

PADG members:
The Esther Piercy Award is an award given by ALCTS and sponsored by YBP,
Inc.
Nominations can be made for any librarian *with not more than 10 years*
of professional experience. As PADG's representative on the Esther Piercy
Award Jury, I'd like to call your attention to the announcement and
description below.
Having served on last year's award jury, I can tell you that not one of
last year's nominees was from the preservation field. Since
preservation librarians have been recognized with the award multiple times
over the past 20 years (including Oya Y. Rieger, Brian Baird, Stephen
Chapman, Nancy Elkington, Jan Merrill-Oldham, and Pamela Darling), I urge
you to think about colleagues you may want to nominate for this year's
award.
If you have questions about the Piercy award or the nomination process,
please feel free to contact me. My contact information is in a signature
file at the end of this message.
Thanks,
Robin

The Esther Piercy Award
Award: The award consists of a $1,500 grant donated by Yankee Book
Peddler, Inc. and a citation presented at the membership meeting of the
Association during the ALA Annual Conference. This award is given to
recognize the contribution to those areas of librarianship included in
library collections and technical services by a librarian with not more
than ten years of professional experience who has shown outstanding promise
for continuing contribution and leadership.
Submission procedure: Nominations shall include 1) name of nominee; 2)
date nominee entered first professional position; and 3) a formal statement
of nomination, with a brief rationale for the nomination, together with a
resume or narrative career outline upon which the award jury can base its
determinations. Letters of endorsement from others should provide
additional evidence of the worthiness of the nominee. The number of letters
of endorsement received for a nominee shall not be a determining factor in
the selection process; rather, the evidence of the person's accomplishments
that they present shall be the factor considered. Nominations for persons
not selected for the award in one year may be resubmitted provided the
person still meets the ten-year limit on length of professional experience.
Eligibility is not limited by country, citizenship, or membership in a
specific organization.
Criteria: Evidence of this promise is determined by the person's
accomplishments, as they are related to technical services and resources,
in such activities as:
1. Leadership in professional associations at local, state, regional
or national level;
2. Contributions to the development, application or utilization of new
or improved methods, techniques and routines;
3. Significant contribution to professional literature; and
4. Conduct of studies or research in the technical services.
Send nominations including, a statement giving the reasons for nomination
and the date your nominee entered his or her first professional position,
with a resume or narrative career outline to: Diane Perushek, chair,
perushek@xxxxxxxxxxx
The deadline for nominations is December 1, 2002.
