SOUTHERN ILLINOIS UNIVERSITY LIBRARY AFFAIRS CARBONDALE, ILLINOIS POSITION:               Preservation Librarian                         (Assistant or Associate Professor) APPOINTMENT:    Full-time, 12-month, Continuing AVAILABLE:      July 1, 2002 ENVIRONMENT: The library services of Southern Illinois University Carbondale (SIUC) are centralized in Morris Library.  Its four subject divisions hold more than 2.4 million volumes, 3.1 million microform units, and over 12,500 current periodicals and serials.  Library users have access to ILLINET Online (the statewide automated system) and to numerous databases and other electronic data files.  As the campus center for access to academic information and collaborative academic technology projects, the Library provides a wide range of services, including reference assistance, instructional and technical support, distance learning, geographic information systems (GIS), and multimedia courseware development.  Morris Library is a member of the Association of Research Libraries, the Center for Research Libraries, and the Greater Western Library Alliance. Morris Library?s Preservation Department, started in 1972 , consists of the Conservation Lab and the Bindery Prep/Marking Unit and employs two Civil Service Staff, a graduate assistant, and six FTE student assistants.  The Library is seeking a knowledgeable, energetic, and creative Preservation Librarian to provide leadership for new initiatives and continuing services.  This position also offers a unique and exciting opportunity to participate in the Library renovation and addition planning process currently underway.  RESPONSIBILITIES: Under the direction of the Associate Dean for Personnel and Technical Services, this position is responsible for further developing and implementing a comprehensive preservation program for general and special collections in all formats.  The Preservation Librarian: Develops preservation policies and practices as well as short- and long-term goals for the department.  Works closely with representatives from all areas of the Library to determine preservation needs and priorities and to coordinate projects. Evaluates Library collections for preservation and reformatting.  Studies and makes recommendations for appropriate applications of digital technologies for preservation.  Collaborates with technical services staff in processing materials for the collection.  Monitors environmental conditions throughout the Library and in two storage facilities; establishes standards for care and handling of collections during renovation and construction projects.  Supervises repair operations and the Bindery Prep/Marking unit.  Manages existing state and grant-funded budgets and seeks funding for future projects.  Maintains the Library?s disaster plan and coordinates emergency response strategies for the Library.  Develops in-house educational and training programs.  Serves on Library committees and represents the Library on matters concerning cooperative preservation programs.  QUALIFICATIONS: Required:  A Master?s degree from an ALA accredited program.  Strong preservation experience or relevant training.  In-depth knowledge of conservation and stabilization treatments for general and special collections.  Familiarity with emerging preservation standards and new technologies.  Strong managerial skills and supervisory ability.  Excellent organizational, analytical, and problem-solving skills.  Ability to work independently as well as part of a group in a collegial setting.  Ability to work in a complex and changing environment with diverse staff and users.  Excellent oral and written communication skills.  Ability to meet criteria for tenure and promotion, including professional service and published research. Preferred: Academic library experience. SALARY: $37,500 or higher, depending on experience and qualifications.
