POSITION:   Preservation Reformatting Librarian

AVAILABLE:  September 15, 2001.

RESPONSIBILITIES:  
Reporting to the Preservation Librarian, the Preservation Reformatting
Librarian manages the Reprographics Unit with its staff of 5.0 FTE staff
and 2.0 FTE students.  The Preservation Reformatting Librarian
oversees the preservation microfilming of current and historic Kentucky
newspapers and primary source materials for the UK Libraries and other
customers.   In collaboration with the Preservation Librarian,
the Preservation Reformatting Librarian manages grant-funded cooperative
microfilming projects and will initiate an in-house brittle book
reformatting program.   The Preservation Reformatting Librarian
monitors budgets, provides outreach to colleagues and customers, develops
markets, and updates the Reprographics web pages.  The Preservation
Reformatting Librarian will further the Preservation Program?s goals to
develop partnerships with the UK Libraries? and the state?s digital
initiatives, and to expand reformatting services, update equipment, and
improve space utilization.

QUALIFICATIONS:

Required:  ALA-accredited MLS.  Knowledge of preservation
microfilming and digitization standards, technical procedures, and best
practices.  Excellent written, oral and interpersonal communication
skills.  Demonstrated ability to establish and maintain effective
working relationships with colleagues, faculty, staff and the public.
Evidence of ability to meet requirements for promotion and tenure and
commitment to ongoing professional service and activity.


Preferred:  Library experience with preservation microfilming
for library collections.  Supervisory experience. Experience using
microfilm and digital equipment.  Project management experience,
including managing grant-funded projects.  Problem solving
skills.  Space planning skills and experience.  Knowledge of
library cataloging and metadata standards/procedures.  Experience
with vendor negotiations, budget management and marketing services.

SALARY:  
$33,000 minimum.  Commensurate with experience and
qualifications.

WORK ENVIRONMENT: 
The Preservation Department serves the entire UK Libraries
system.  It comprises three units:  Binding, Conservation and
Reprographics.  The Reprographics Unit opened in 1954 to serve as
the major newspaper filming agent for the state.  From 1983 to 1991,
the Unit served as the center for the Kentucky Newspaper Project. 
Since 1992, it has participated in the SOLINET/ASERL Cooperative
Preservation Microfilming Project.  Today, the Reprographics Unit
films 180 current Kentucky newspapers as well as books, manuscripts,
scrapbooks, and other formats for all UK Libraries and non-UK
customers.  The Reprographics Unit aims to broaden its scope to
include digital services.  Projects to explore film to digital
conversion using a MEKEL 525 film scanner will begin in 2002.

The University of Kentucky Libraries system includes the central William
T. Young Library; Medical Center Library; Law Library; Special
Collections and Archives; Art Library; Architecture Library; Music
Library; Agricultural Information Center; Education Library; and six
Science and Engineering Libraries.  Combined holdings total 2.8
million volumes.  Young Library, opened in April 1998, houses 1.2
million volumes emphasizing the social sciences, humanities and life
sciences.

The University of Kentucky library system functions in a team-based
environment, with a staff of 65 librarians and 121 support
staff.    It serves a student body of 24,000.  The
library is a member of ARL, SOLINET, ASERL, EDUCAUSE, Center for Research
Libraries, and is a regional depository for federal documents.
