Rare Books Consultant
For 2000-2001


The State Library of Pennsylvania, through its fiscal agent, Mansfield
University of Pennsylvania, seeks responses to a RFP for consulting services
to
evaluate and provide services for a rare books collection.  The RFP is
available from the Purchasing Office, Attn:  Ms. Margaret Chapel, Brooks
Maint. Building, Mansfield University, Mansfield, Pa.  16933.  Questions

Duties:

			*	Responsible for the care and maintenance on
a 20,000 volume closed stack collection.
			*	Provides reference service for this
collection.
			*	Evaluates printed materials for treatment
and performs repairs, constructs enclosures, or refers to outside
conservator.
			*	Work with furniture restorers to restore
furniture assigned to the reading room
			*	Select additional furnishings appropriate to
the room
			*	Serves as library liaison to committees
working to develop a digital exhibit as well as an instructional unit for
school children
			*	Provides information about the collection
and its special environment needs to library management as plans for a
building renovation are started.

Qualifications:

			Requires a BA/BS (a Masters in Library Science or
American History would be a plus); formal or on-the-job training in
bookbinding or book conservation; two to three years library experience
(research or rare books/special collections library preferred); PC skills;
dexterity and strength to handle awkward, heavy, and/or fragile materials;
ability to solve problems, work collaboratively, and communicate
effectively.
