Position Vacancy
PRESERVATION LIBRARIAN

Position Description:  The Preservation Librarian plans, organizes, 
coordinates, and implements the preservation program for the University of 
Iowa Libraries in collaboration with the Conservator and other Preservation 
Staff.  The preservation program includes management and coordination of 
preservation activities for all formats, reformatting efforts, disaster 
preparedness planning, staff and patron education related to preservation, 
coordination of preservation activities with branch libraries and other 
processing units, and supervision of the Preservation Department.  The 
current agenda for program development includes significant expansion of 
preservation services for non-print collections.

The Preservation Department includes units for assessment and reformatting, 
binding and marking, and a conservation unit responsible for physical 
treatments.  The Libraries has a spacious and well-equipped conservation 
facility staffed by a Conservator and full-time assistant, plus student 
help.  The Preservation Librarian manages the preservation budget, and is 
typically responsible for the oversight of grant-funded preservation 
projects and outsourced preservation services.  The Preservation Librarian 
participates in the preparation of preservation components of grant 
proposals and is expected to represent the University of Iowa Libraries in 
appropriate regional and national forums.  In addition to the Preservation 
Librarian, the Preservation Department consists of one professional (the 
Conservator) and eight library assistants, as well as student 
employees.  The position reports to the Director for Collections and 
Information Resources.

Qualifications
Required:  A graduate degree from an ALA accredited library and information 
science program, or the equivalent; general knowledge of preservation 
operations in a research library environment; a minimum of three years 
professional library experience; demonstrated managerial and leadership 
abilities; excellent oral and written communications skills; excellent 
interpersonal and supervisory skills; demonstrated commitment to 
professional involvement.

Preferred:  Working knowledge of the preservation of magnetic and 
photographic media, including their storage, use, dubbing, and 
migration.  Working knowledge of preservation issues related to digital 
imaging, archiving, and metadata generation.

Salary and Appointment:  Appointment rank and salary will be based on 
relevant experience and educational background and will be made at the 
Librarian II or III level.  Salary range $32,775-$55,105.  The University 
of Iowa offers an attractive package of benefits including 24 days of paid

The University of Iowa Libraries: The University of Iowa Libraries consists 
of the Main Library and 11 branch libraries, the largest of which is the 
Hardin Library for the Health Sciences.  With over 4 million volumes, the 
collections of the University of Iowa Libraries rank 30 out of 107 in the 
Association of Research Libraries. The University of Iowa Libraries is a 
member of OCLC and the Committee on Institutional Cooperation (CIC). The 
Libraries has been active in the development of digital collections and 
services through units like the Information Arcade and Commons, and the 
Scholarly Digital Resources Center.  Plans are in place to increase 
substantially support for collections in film and television studies.  Work 
is currently underway to migrate the Libraries' NOTIS-based system to 
ALEPH, a client-server based product from Ex Libris.  The Libraries 
provides a program of support for professional development activities and 
its staff members are actively engaged in national cooperative efforts.

Environment:  The University and Iowa City:  A major research and teaching 
institution, the University of Iowa offers recognized programs in a wide 
variety of areas.  The University consists of a faculty of some 1,700 
serving over 28,000 students, over 9,000 of whom are registered in graduate 
and professional degree programs.  The University of Iowa employs over 
15,000 permanent full-time and part-time staff.  Of special note is the 
University of Iowa  Center for the Book, an active interdisciplinary 
program involving faculty, students and librarians interested in the book 
arts and the cultural role of the book.  Iowa City is a community with 
excellent educational, recreational, and cultural advantages, and is 
readily accessible via interstate highways and a major airport only 30 
minutes away.
