We also fought with this, and came up with a gentle sort of policy. As you
say, the culture of a place is not apt to change quickly, so this is a
reasonable start. As with all policies, when the 'higher ups' support and
follow it, everyone else is more encouraged to follow suit. Here is the
policy:
POLICY REGARDING FOOD AND DRINK IN THE
LIBRARY'S AND THE MUSEUM ARCHIVES' OFFICES
The Library and Museum Archives staffs will
* Clear their workstations of all collection material before eating or
drinking
* Clean workspaces after eating and discard all organic material as
soon as
possible outside the Library and Museum Archives
space
* Keep food and beverages out of both reading rooms
* Be considerate of the odors of food and drink for others working in
open-
office spaces
* The staff is strongly encouraged to eat lunch outside of the Library
and
Museum Archives
Adherence to these polices will be monitored closely;
if abuses occur, food will no longer be permitted in the
Library and Museum Archive spaces.
