POSITION:      Preservation Reformatting Librarian

AVAILABLE: Open until filled.  Review of applications begins April 6, 2000.

RESPONSIBILITIES:  Reporting to the Preservation Librarian, the 
Preservation Reformatting Librarian provides leadership for the 
Reprographics Unit, which includes 5.5 FTE staff and 2.0 FTE 
students.   The Preservation Reformatting Librarian oversees the 
preservation microfilming of 175 current Kentucky newspapers for UK 
Libraries and other customers.  Additionally, the Preservation Reformatting 
Librarian oversees the filming of historic newspapers and materials from 
Special Collections and Archives.  In collaboration with the Preservation 
Librarian, the Preservation Reformatting Librarian manages the NEH-funded 
cooperative microfilming projects and will initiate an in-house brittle 
book reformatting program.   The Preservation Reformatting Librarian 
monitors budgets, provides outreach to colleagues and customers, develops 
markets, and updates the Reprographics web pages.  The Preservation 
Reformatting Librarian will further the Preservation Program's goals to 
develop partnerships with the UK Libraries' and the state's digital 
initiatives.   An additional program goal includes expanding the 
reformatting services, updating equipment, and improving the department's 
space utilization.

QUALIFICATIONS (REQUIRED): ALA-accredited MLS.  Knowledge of preservation 
microfilming and digitization policies and technical procedures, with a 
minimum of 2 years successful experience in a microfilm operation or other 
relevant professional preservation experience.  Supervisory 
experience.  Project management experience.  Problem solving 
skills.  Excellent written, oral and interpersonal communication 
skills.  Demonstrated ability to establish and maintain effective working 
relationships with colleagues, faculty, staff and the public. Demonstrated 
knowledge of current and emerging technologies and their application to 
library services.  Ability to view issues from a library system-wide 
perspective, foster teamwork, and stimulate cross-functional 
collaboration.  Evidence of ability to meet requirements for promotion and 
tenure and commitment to ongoing professional development and activity.


QUALIFICATIONS (PREFERRED): Experience with preservation microfilming for 
library collections.  Management of microfilm and/or digital 
operations.  Familiarity with microfilm and/or digital 
equipment.  Experience managing grant-funded projects.  Space planning 
skills and experience.  Knowledge of library cataloging and metadata 
standards/procedures.  Experience with vendor negotiations, budget 
management and marketing services.

WORK ENVIRONMENT: The University of Kentucky Libraries system includes the 
central William T. Young Library; Medical Center Library; Law Library; 
Special Collections and Archives; Art Library; Architecture Library; Music 
Library; Agricultural Information Center; Education Library; and six 
Science and Engineering Libraries.  Combined holdings total 2.7 million 
volumes.  Young Library, opened in April 1998, houses 1.2 million volumes 
emphasizing the social sciences, humanities and life sciences.

The University of Kentucky library system functions in a team-based 
environment, with a staff of 65 librarians and 121 support staff.    It 
serves a student body of 24,000.  The library is a member of ARL, SOLINET, 
ASERL, EDUCAUSE, the Center for Research Libraries, and is a regional 
depository for federal documents.

The Preservation Department serves the entire UK Libraries system.  It 
comprises three units:  Binding, Conservation and Reprographics.  The 
Reprographics Unit opened in the 1950's to serve as the major newspaper 
filming agent for the state.  From 1983 to 1991, the Unit served as the 
center for the Kentucky Newspaper Project.  Since 1992, it has participated 
in the SOLINET/ASERL Cooperative Preservation Microfilming Project.  Today, 
the Reprographics Unit films 175 current Kentucky newspapers as well as 
books, manuscripts, scrapbooks, and other formats for all UK Libraries and 
non-UK customers.  In the next decade the Reprographics Unit aims to 
broaden its services to include digital technology.


SALARY:  Commensurate with experience and qualifications ($30,000 minimum)
