ANNOUNCEMENT OF PROFESSIONAL VACANCY
POSITION:		Preservation Assessment Librarian
AVAILABLE:		July 1, 2000

DESCRIPTION	

The Preservation Assessment Librarian will conduct a series of surveys and
research projects in order to provide background information for a
comprehensive preservation plan in the Academic Affairs Library.  Working
with an advisory panel including the Preservation Librarian, Conservator,
and three collection managers, the Preservation Assessment Librarian will
design and carry out condition surveys for selected collections throughout
the main and departmental libraries.  Survey data will be supplemented by
discussions with subject specialists regarding potential projects and
priorities for treatment.  Significant potential projects will be
researched for feasibility and cost estimates.  The Preservation
Assessment Librarian will draft a final report including presentation and
interpretation of survey data, synthesis of collection manager and
advisory panel discussions, and profiles of potential projects.  As time
permits, the Preservation Librarian may assign other preservation
projects. 

QUALIFICATIONS           

Required:  ALA-accredited Masters Degree in Library Science.  Formal
coursework in preservation or significant experience working in a
preservation department.  Demonstrated ability to plan, organize, and
carry out long-term projects.  Excellent oral and written communication
skills; ability to work independently and with a committee.

Preferred:  Certificate in preservation administration.

SALARY AND BENEFITS
	
This is a 12 month appointment with option for an additional one year
reappointment at an annual salary of $30,000. Standard State benefits of
annual leave, sick leave, and State or TIAA-CREF retirement plan.
Librarians are members of the general faculty.
