ALCTS Seeks Editor

ALCTS invites applications for Editor of the ALCTS Newsletter Online,
a quarterly electronic newsletter accessible on the World Wide Web.
The editor is appointed for a nonrenewable five-year term, beginning
after the 2000 annual conference. The ALCTS Newsletter is the primary
method for keeping the ALCTS membership informed about the work and
aims of the Association and contains announcements and reports of
ALCTS organizational developments, educational programs, committee
work, and other activities. The editor is responsible for determining
the content of each issue; for soliciting, screening, editing, and/or
writing all copy to appear in the newsletter; and for correcting,
revising, and approving layouts produced by ALA Production Services.

The editor serves as an ex-officio member of the ALCTS Board of
Directors and the ALCTS Publications Committee and is responsible for
informing these bodies of issues and developments affecting the
newsletter and to receive input regarding general content and
priorities. The editor also works with the ALCTS Executive Director
and other ALCTS Headquarters staff members to ensure full coverage of
ALCTS activities and to coordinate Newsletter content with ALCTS
Network News (AN2), ALCTS' e-mail news bulletin. Following selection,
the editor-designate will work with the current editor, Dale Swensen,
who has completed his five-year term, thus ensuring continuity.

Requirements include
* demonstrated writing and editing ability;
* familiarity with needs and issues facing professionals employed in
areas of ALCTS interests (collection development and management,
acquisition of library materials, cataloging and classification,
serials management, and preservation);
* ability to work with deadlines; and
* experience with hardware and software used in the production and
transmission of electronic text. Membership in ALCTS is required as is
attendance at both annual and midwinter conferences. Desirable
qualifications include experience in producing Web documents using
HTML and prior experience on ALCTS committees.

The deadline for applications is November 1, 1999. A letter
explaining the applicant's interest in and qualifications for the
editor position and a current vita should be submitted to ALCTS, ALA,
50 E. Huron St., Chicago IL 60611. The Search Committee expects to
conduct interviews at the January 2000 Midwinter Conference in San
Antonio.
