Weeding collections

At the University of Kentucky, we are planning a weeding and collection
reorganization project with the goal to establish solid, current, "working"
collection in the main library, a lower-use research support collection at
an on-campus, open stacks storage facility, and an off-site storage
facility for unprocessed collections and extremely low-use materials.
During this process, which we expect to take more than a year, a lot of
materials will be handled and shifted--some in not so good condition.

During this process, a team of collection development and preservation
specialists will be evaluating the "quality" of the collection--not that
"quality" has been defined yet. We have conspectus data to analyze and
some articles to peruse from the literature. Additionally, we have some
basic ideas about physical condition, reformatting options, storage
strategies, etc. We would, however, like to get some more information from
other libraries/archives that have engaged in similar projects.

If you have undergone a collection evaluation, collection weeding or
storage identification project, would you be willing to share guidelines,
advice, anecdotes or cautions? If so, you can reply directly to me; and if
the PADG-L listservship is interested, I will summarize these replies for
the list.

Thanks in advance for your assistance.
