Music Conservation/Preservation Course

The Sibley Music Library, serving the Eastman School of Music, is
offering its annual Music Conservation Workshop, comprising a hands-on
introduction to the binding and conservation practices needed for
library circulation of music, a tour of Sibley?s brittle music
preservation (replacement/reformat) program, and one or more special
sessions covering particular student interests. The primary target
audience is music librarians who have, or are about to have,
conservation responsibilities, and library conservation staff interested

in the specific needs of music, but anyone interested in conserving
music collections is welcome. Enrollment is limited to 8 students and
the curriculum is tailored each year to address the particular
backgrounds and needs of the class. Topics covered include:
- paper conservation
- pamphlet binding of new sheet music
- custom pamphlets and portfolios for special music problems
- hard-cover binding repair
- what to look/ask for from commercial binders for scores
- conservation supplies and suppliers
- photocopy/facsimile selection and preparation
- concerns in microfilm preservation and digital access for music
- overview of conservation of recordings
