IS MAGNETISM HERE TO STAY? THE MANAGEMENT OF MAGNETIC MEDIA
     COLLECTIONS.

Magnetic media (audio and video recordings, computer
discs and tapes) is increasingly becoming a significant portion of
library and archival collections. However, many managers and curators
of such collections are unaware of the problems of these media as
formats for long-term preservation. The life expectancy of individual
magnetic media recordings may be measured in decades, rather than
centuries. Whether dealing with circulating or archival collections,
understanding the nature of the various magnetic media, their inherent
vice, the factors that cause their deterioration, their equipment, and
the storage and handling of the recordings themselves are the keys to
     maximizing their useful life.

Through lecture, discussion, and some hands-on work, this one-day
workshop will provide collection management strategies to aid in
protecting and preserving these valuable resources. Instructor for
this workshop is Alan Lewis, Audiovisual Preservation Expert at the
National Archives, Special Media Archives Division.
