  If the items are indeed tomorrow's rarities, are not in boxes, and will be
housed in secure areas, you might consider using the approach used by many
curators of special collections:  attach the bar-code label to the
alkaline-paper streamer that records the items call number and resides
inside the book.  If housed as special collections items, the streamers are
not likely to stray.
