RE: 583 field

Preservation Resources has been using the 583 field since 1994. The field
is used during post-film updating of records that have been queued for
microfilming. The 583 is used as a companion to the 533 microfilm field.
The 583 field is used to indicate that the title has actually been filmed,
the funding agent if different than the owning institution, and the year
that filming was completed.

Hope this is helpful,

The question of using the 583 field for preservation information has
come up in my insitution several times now. We are not currently
using it. I'd be interested in knowing who is using it and how it is
being used, i.e., for what types of preservation activity, and how
they are being described there (brief description, abbreviations, etc).
