ABOUT THE SPEAKERS AND THE PRESENTATIONS
***Cathy Baker has been a paper conservator for 25 years. Formerly on
the faculty of the Art Conservation program at Buffalo State College,
she is currently a graduate student in the MFA program in Book Arts at
the University of Alabama in Tuscaloosa. Her talk covers environmental
concerns, storage, housing, and fundamentals of care that will protect a
collection, even in the absence of a dedicated preservation or
conservation staff.
***Karen Sinkule heads the Collections Conservation and Preservation
Microfilming programs at the National Library of Medicine. The NLM has a
highly developed program of preparedness, and considerable experience in
the recovery of water damaged materials. The deployment of appropriate
supplies and equipment, as well as the techniques for recovery after a
disaster will be covered.
***Wes Boomgarden has served the field of library materials
preservation administration since 1983, and has written and lectured on
a wide variety of preservation topics. He will examine the changing role
of "preservation triage," the review of damaged or deteriorated
materials for conservation, replacement, and reformatting. In the
increasingly networked, digital environment, how are treatment,
retention, and reformatting decisions changing? How will we define the
importance of "the original" even with "ordinary" traditional library
materials?
***Cathleen Baker has researched the life of paper historian Dard
Hunter, who traveled globally to study paper, and published books on the
history of paper and papermaking. Ms Baker's definitive biography of
Dard Hunter is entitled, By his own labor: the Biography of Dard Hunter.
It will be published in 1998.
