The Centre for Cultural Heritage Studies requires two Research
Associates to participate in collaborative research activities involving
the National Museum of Australia and the National Gallery of Australia.
The project involves the investigation of problems associated with
Aboriginal bark paintings in museum custody and the development of
strategies for their conservation.

A degree in conservation or materials science and experience in a
relevant branch of conservation using analytical techniques in
conservation studies is required.

One of the positions will be associated with the NMA and the other with
the NGA and are available initially for 1 year with the possibility of
an extension dependent upon funding.

POSITION DESCRIPTION


DIVISION:  Management and Technology
 UC LEVEL 5
SCHOOL/UNIT:  Information Sciences and Engineering

SUPERVISOR:  Professor DC Creagh LOCAL TITLE:  ARC Research Associate

QUALIFICATIONS/EXPERIENCE:
Degree in Conservation or Materials Science.  Experience in a relevant
branch of conservation and the use of analytical techniques in
conservation studies.

DESCRIPTION OF POSITION:
Undertake analysis of the constituent materials of existing Aboriginal
bark paintings and actively participate in the conservation of
Aboriginal bark paintings; participate in fieldwork and analyze
materials resulting from fieldwork.

ACCOUNTABILITY:
The ARC Research Associate will be responsible on a daily basis: to
designated supervisors at the National Gallery of Australia and the
National Museum of Australia; for the project: to Professor DC Creagh.

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES UNDERTAKEN:

   *  Use analytical techniques such as FTIR, Raman microscopy, electron
     microscopy to study the composition of materials in Aboriginal bark
     paintings;
   * assist in the development of techniques for conservation, such as
     ultrasonic misting techniques; and
   * assist in the collection and classification of artefacts.

ESSENTIAL CRITERIA

1. Degree in Conservation, Materials Science, or equivalent.
2. Demonstrated experience in a relevant branch of conservation.
3. Demonstrated experience with modern analytical techniques.
4. Experience in the treatment of organic materials.
5. An appreciation and empathy with aboriginal culture.
6. Ability to work as a member of a multidisciplinary team.
7. Strongly developed written and oral communication skills.
8. Demonstrated interpersonal skills.
9. Demonstrated understanding of, and commitment to implementation of
equity principles.
10. Must hold a current driver?s licence.
