Re: Vinod's research talk

These are the preliminary documents prepared by Vinod Daniel (Australiam

Museum, NSW) for the AICCM
Research Audit. More information is still being collected and processed.

The information will go to
the AICCM Annual National meeting this month, for consideration.

SMOCM as a group were not initially aware of the Research Audit. This
seemed to be the case for a number of organisations and individuals.
However, we have now responded, albeit somewhat tardily.

Carmel Nicholas
(Nat. Co-ordinator SMOCM)

(Note from moderator: This message only contains one of the documents
Carmel has to send - we are having a little trouble getting the others
into a format my system can read. The others will be sent to the list
ASAP.)

1) In answer to your survey regarding research, we are
currently involved in a project with RMIT on pixie
analysis of pigments from a few Arthur Streeton
pictures; we are doing a complete pigment workup on
our Tiepolo "Banquet of Cleopatra" with University of
Melobourne PhD student Deborah Lau which will be
incorporated in a publication eventually- the painting
needs major treatment and it will be a long process to
prepare the ground for it being off the wall for 2 years
or so;

2) We are also involved in the coordinated national data
base of i.r. images to document Australian paintings,
but have also begun using the equipment quite a lot for
looking at other pictures in our collections; Linda
Waters has a project currently on hold because of other
committments exploring phase contrast radiography of
paintings with CSIRO; and we are carrying out
documentation and evaluation of a variety of foams and
other packing materials used in packing for the
relocation of our collection.

3) Holly McGowan Jackson is aiming to carry out an
investigation of corrosion of schlagmetal, but this will
await finding a suitable research partner and with the
heavy load of work over the next few years, its is
unlikely she will have a lot of time to devote to it.

The study will focus on quantifying the level of free acid
required to cause a change in the gelatin emulsion and the
Modulation Transfer Function (MTF). By utilising
numerous analytical techniques (eg. Gel Permeation
Chromotography and Dynamic Mechanical Analysis), a
more thorough understanding of the changes will be gained.
=46rom a collection management point of view, this research
will highlight the importance of well-controlled storage
environments and duplication priorities for sound negative

National Library of Australia CANBERRA

1) Cellulose acetate project. Institutions like NLA have
much larger holdings of acetate-based materials than of
nitrate, in still and moving photography, microfilm,
and sound recording collections. This is a time bomb
that has been widely studied, and a number of solutions
have been proposed and variously adopted. The aim of
this research is to identify the solutions, evaluated their
practicality and likely cost-effectiveness for Australian
institutions, develop some sense of the scope of the
problem in this country, and if possible develop some
decission supporting tools. We are especially looking
for any benefits in collaborative action. The project is
due to start in October 1999 and is internally funded to
June 2000.

2) Preservation of digital information. This is a very large
and complex "box" containing a number of projects and
programs, including:

=85 short term strategies for dealing with the instability of
standard information carriers including floppy disks and
DAT,
=85 methods of capturing and archiving online digital
publications,
=85 viable long-term preservation strategies to deal with
software and hardware dependencies,
=85 metadata required to support long term management of
digital publications,
=85 methods of recognising when preservation action is
needed.
We have been very active in this field since 1995, when we
replaced a Preservation Science position with a specialist
position in Electronic Preservation. We also support other
research in this field, actively collaborating with a number
of special projects internationally, other national libraries,
and state libraries in Australia, and through our PADI
website international forum for reporting and stimulating
relevant research.

3) Data rescue strategies. We have a separate project
researching the rescue of data
4) CD-R longevity. Another associated but separate
project is looking at the stability of various types of
Recordable CD to guide both our purchasing programs
and our deterioration -monitoring programs.
5) Magnetic tape recovery. We have done quite a lot of
work on techniques for reversing hydrolysis of
magnetic tapes, refining "baking" regimes commonly
used in sound archives for deteriorating tapes.
6) Preservation digitisation. Libraries have long used
microfilming as a means of capturing information from
fragile paper carriers. As part ofa global research effort
we are inbestigating the preservation uses of digital
capture, through a series of focused projects with text
material. By sharing the findings of many projects we
will improve our understanding of what can be achieved
with digital technology as a preservation tool, and at
what costs.
7) Permanent paper research. The National Library has a
long -standing research interest in "permanent" paper
and regularly assesses its use by Australian publishers.
8) Mass deacidification. We are re-evaluating overseas
experience with mass deacidification methods to review
their applicability and viability in this country. (This is
very much review of existing research, to inform our
own decision making, rather than developing new
research.)
9) Storage conditions. Finally, one area where we are
unable to make a research effort but see a huge need, it
is understanding how to make good decisions about
storage conditions, reconciling demonstrable benefits
for collections and long term users, and the associated
costs. It is an area full of myths and the sound of
grinding axes.

deposits. The aim of the project is to determine whether
variation of the isotopic signature of lead trapped
within the hydroxyapatite structure of dental enamel can
be used to provenance the individuals found within
burial deposits. As part of the study she is undertaking
a detailed chemical study of the inorganic fraction of
dental tissue in order to determine where the lead
contaminant sits within the crystal structure of
hydroxyapatite. It is hoped that using the methodology
she is developing it will be possible to identify the
origins of first generation migrants to a given area and
thence determine the degree of sedentism with
archaeological populations.

=B7 Brian French is undertaking an archaeological survey of
the copper mining industry of NSW. This industrial
archaeology study focuses on the population dynamics
and development of the mining industry in Australia in
the early part of the nineteenth century. The project has
focussed on three mining settlements within Central-
West NSW,each of which were formerly centres of
mining activity within the State. The study focuses on
the town that grew around the mining centres, the
people that populated the towns and death of the town
that followed closure of the mines.

=B7 Phil Ronaldson is undertaking a mapping program
using remote-sensing methods to investigate the
protohistory of South-Central Vietnam. The study
concentrated on the former Indic civilisation called
Champa that predates modern Vietnam. The cultural
remains of this civilisation were last surveyed in the
early part of the current Century. It is clear that this
early French work was far from complete and that many
sites of archaeological and cultural importance were
missed. This project aims to produce a more
comprehensive survey of the remains in order that the
culture may be better understood and protected.

=B7 Glennda Marsh-Letts has been investigating
Ancient Egyptian Linen. She has worked closely with
the Nicholson Museum of Antiquities, the University
of Sydney and the Museum of Ancient Cultures,
Macquarie University on her research. She also gained
valuable field experience in Egypt with Macquarie
University's excavation at Helwan, near Cairo, which
was directed by Dr.E. Christiana Kohler. Though she is
concentrating on Egyptian linen, she has been
following up her interest in salt affected archaeological
sites, and so would welcome any feedback from
conservators or archaeologists who have salt affected
objects.

1) All our conservation activities relate to macro
conservation through the maintenance of environmental
controls (via BMS) or repackaging. We rely on visits
from conservators based in our Canberra, Sydney or
Melbourne offices to advise on any repackaging work
required. This normally takes the form of a project plan
that can be followed by contract or lay staff.
2) Any research projects that are undertaken are initiated in
our Canberra Office. If you have not done so already
you should contact Ian Batterham who is the Assistant
Director Preservation Services.
