[frameconnews] Glass and UV
Wish regard to the general discussions on glass, two things.
Sue Maltby asks about UV filtering films. We have experimented with them, but
found it impossible to apply them without getting small air bubbles trapped
underneath This is no doubt down to our inexperience in application But the
visual appearance was not pleasant. Since most customers will reject frames
with even tiny faults this was obviously a non starter. laminated glass
offers a good physical protection as well as UV filtering and is our
preferred choice in these situations. We have however advised clients to a
have these films applied to windows to protect contents inside their
properties. There are specialist firms who can carry out this work. These
films (like all UV filters) do have a lifespan and need to be checked on a
regular basis.
We also have a uv monitor and periodically check filters but not every piece.
I was interested in the posting from The fine Arts Consultancy on this matter
and think it a sound policy that we will likely adopt. I would like to know
what light source is used as a control, what the UV and lux output is, and
wether there is an accepted standard for this test source.
