Masterclass in the Care and Conservation of Basketry
Fitzwilliam Museum
Cambridge, UK
June 2016

University of Cambridge Museums is organising a two-day course in
the Care and Conservation of Basketry with Barbara Wills

The first day is general, exploring a range of baskets and weaves.
Participants will get an insight into the construction of a basket
so as to understand condition, stability, history, plant material
and evidence of different phases of intervention. Preventive
conservation will also be considered, and some useful and simple
storage techniques explored. This day is aimed at conservators,
curators, collection managers, museum assistants and technicians.
There will be opportunities to share knowledge and discuss problems
in collections.

The second day will offer more specialist information, concentrating
on mechanisms of deterioration and object treatment, with a focus on
ancient Egyptian basketry. This practical session will offer a
chance to try out some techniques and conservation materials. This
day is more suited to practical conservators.

We would like to invite expressions of interest in this course. If
you are considering attending, please could you indicate which areas
are of greatest interest? Then we can tailor the course
accordingly.
