The collections and conservation facility supports the new museum located on the National Mall in Washington DC. Incumbent reports to the Head of Office of Collections Management (OCM) or designee for technical supervision. The museum's primary purposes are to acquire, maintain and preserve objects that document social, cultural, political, military, technological and scientific developments in the United States; to conduct scholarly research designed to make significant contributions to the body of knowledge in the fields of African American history; to publish findings for both scholarly and general audiences; and to interpret historical developments through public exhibitions and programs. Incumbent supervises the operations of the Conservation Program, including: Approving and developing policies, procedures and training for the proper handling, care and storage of collection items, and for their presentation and exhibition Identifying and proposing methodology and treatment needs and performing skilled conservation work in the examination, documentation, preservation, and conservation of objects in the NMAAHC collection Overseeing preparation of objects for inaugural exhibits of the Mall museum, other exhibits, loans, public programs, special events and/or storage Reviewing and approving written condition surveys, technical examination reports, treatment proposals and reports Advising conservators, assistant conservators, contractors, lab assistants, interns, fellows, and volunteers on preservation methods, requirements, and ramifications for handling of use of NMAAHC collections Performing hands-on treatments, using methods and materials to the standard of the American Institute of Conservation (AIC) of Historic and Artistic Works and Participating in professional conferences, meetings, training workshops or seminars You must apply through USAjobs to be considered.
