Assistant Conservation Officer: Medical Collections Project

Fixed-term post available for 18 months

14 hours per week (with some flexibility possible on
working days)

The University of Leeds Library has received a Wellcome Research
Resources grant to create high quality catalogues and indexes to
medical archives and manuscripts, held in Special Collections.  In
addition, the grant will ensure appropriate conservation and
preservation treatment of all items.  Alongside the Wellcome project
the Library will digitise selected items from the collections.

You will hold a professional qualification or equivalent in book
and/or paper conservation and have experience of managing and
delivering conservation and collections maintenance programmes
within a library or archive.  You will also demonstrate an
understanding of how conservation can facilitate digitisation
programmes.  You will be able to work under pressure, manage
multiple tasks and prioritise your workload to meet project
deadlines, whilst maintaining accuracy and attention to detail.
Confidence with IT and excellent interpersonal and communication
skills are required as well as the capacity to work both
independently and co-operatively as a member of a small team.  You
will be able to show a commitment to CPD.  PACR accreditation will
be an advantage as would experience of supervising staff and
volunteers.

NB.  The nature of the work necessitates working with materials that
may be dusty or mouldy, in low temperature or low light
environments, and lifting and handling of materials, sometimes
working at height.  Protective equipment and training will be
provided.
