Postdoctoral Fellow The British Museum Full time; 41 hours per week Fixed Term; 3 years in duration UKP27,360 per annum Application Deadline Tuesday 29 December 2015, Midday The Department of Scientific Research at the British Museum has an exciting Fellowship opportunity for an early career researcher with a doctorate in a science discipline. The role provides time and resources for the Fellow to conduct a substantial research project in the area of textile analysis to include organic colourants and fibre characterization. Key areas of responsibility: To design and carry out a scientific research project with a textile focus, including organic colourant analysis and fibre characterization To contribute to development of in-house reference collections of specimens/data for fibres and organic colourants To select and use a range of analytical equipment and, working alongside the other scientists, use these skills in order to respond to curatorial, scientific and conservation questions To participate in the wider activities of the department, including contributing to the Museum's public programme, in order to fully understand the role of museum scientists within an organisation To update colleagues at regular progress meetings and publish results as appropriate, through internal reports and peer-reviewed publications To organize and lead an international workshop/symposium related to the Fellow's main research project Person Specification: The successful candidate will possess a PhD or equivalent in a scientific discipline, with experience in application and use of LC/MS or HPLC and/or SEM for textile analysis (colourants and fibres). Work experience may include working in a laboratory and/or research environment, for example, in a postdoctoral or research fellowship position. You will be able to communicate effectively and clearly to a variety of audiences in oral and written form, as well as a high level of IT literacy. Strong team working abilities and good organisational skills are essential. The post-holder should hold a publication record or other evidence of written capabilities. Experience in the analysis of museum/archaeological objects and materials would be advantageous, as is experimental research experience and the ability to plan and execute research.
