Workshop on cleaning painted surfaces and paper

From: Laura Fuster-Lopez <laufuslo<-at->
Date: Wednesday, December 9, 2015
Cleaning Workshop-1: Painted Surfaces
Universidad Politecnica de Valencia (Spain)
25-27 January 2016 (24 h)

Instructor: Richard Wolbers

During the course of this three-day workshop, participants will
be presented with a general survey of the theoretical principles
needed to evaluate, as well as formulate, for themselves,
tailored aqueous and solvent based cleaning systems for general
cleaning purposes on painted and gilded surfaces. A survey of
gelling materials will be presented, followed by lectures on
general aqueous methods for the removal soil/wax and other
non-original surface occluding materials, the preparation of
emulsion and micro-emulsion cleaning systems, and solvent gel
preparation. Preparations will be made for soil and coating
reduction, with the goal to preserve the build-up of accumulated
finish coatings, through tailored surface cleaning effects.
Case histories illustrating the use of these cleaning materials
will be presented during morning lecture sessions. Afternoon
sessions will be devoted to the practical preparation of
materials discussed in the morning sessions. The goal will be
to better empower the participants to formulate tailored surface
cleaning preparations for soiling and other accumulated surface
material removal problems. The participants will be both
invited to bring test or problematic paintings or decoratively
painted surfaces to work out cleaning systems for. Expendable
samples from typical clear coated, and faux-finished painted
surfaces will also be provided to experiment with. The
participants will be invited to share the results of their
individual experiments in a final class presentation.

    Theory Lessons: mornings
    9-13.00
    75 Euro students
    100 Euro professionals

    Practical Workshop: afternoons
    14.30-18.30
    250 Euro students
    275 Euro professionals

Cleaning Workshop-2: Paper Bathing/Stain Removal
Universidad Politecnica de Valencia (Spain)
28-30 January 2016 (24 h)

Instructor: Richard Wolbers

During this three-day workshop, participants will be presented
with a review of basic aqueous cleaning techniques or strategies
for paper substrates. The notion of generally 'isotonic'
bathing papers that are wet cleanable will be introduced. pH
and conductivity measurements on paper surfaces, as well as the
construction of simple bathing systems that accommodate these
factors will be accomplished. Simple aqueous carrier or gel
systems (agarose and xanthan gums) will also be covered. Enzymes
in aqueous paper conservation treatments will also be covered.
The students will be encouraged to explore the BRENDA enzyme
database online to better engineer their own enzyme
preparations. More advanced macro- and micro-emulsions for
blending solvent and water cleaning systems together for both
'wet' and 'dry' cleaning needs, including the cleaning of water
sensitive media, and leather and parchment materials will be
discussed. The goal of this session will be to better empower
the participants to formulate tailored preparations for common
surface cleaning problems (soil, staining, and adhesive removal)
that require minimal aqueous interventions. The participants
will be invited to continue their experiments in practical
sessions each afternoon and share the results of their
individual experiments in a final class presentation.
