The Fitzwilliam Museum houses the principal collections of art and
antiquities of the University of Cambridge, and holds over half a
million objects in its care.  It is also one of the eight museums
that comprise the University of Cambridge Museums consortium (UCM).

The Department of Manuscripts and Printed Books (MSSPB) preserves
the finest museum collection of illuminated manuscripts in the world
outside the Vatican Museum, one of the most important collections of
manuscript and printed music in this country, fine printed books,
literary autographs and correspondence.  It is also responsible for
the Museum's archives.  The collections total upwards of 132,500
objects: 1,000 illuminated manuscripts and leaves; 1,500 music
volumes; 20,000 rare printed books, and over 80,000 literary
autographs and correspondence.  There are over 30,000 items in the
Museum's archives.

The purpose of this role is to support and maintain the collections
of the Fitzwilliam Museum's Manuscripts and Printed Books and of the
Wren Library at Trinity College as well as the University's national
and international reputation for excellence in teaching and
research.

The successful candidate will carry out conservation treatments and
research into the collections under the guidance of the Conservator
of Manuscripts and Printed Books (Assistant Keeper), in consultation
with relevant Museum and Wren Library colleagues.Typical material
for treatment includes medieval and Renaissance illuminated
manuscripts, fine printed books dating from the 15th to the 21st
century, manuscript and printed music, literary autographs and
archival material.

The role-holder will be directly involved in the installation of a
major manuscript exhibition starting in July 2016, and in planning
and carrying out practical conservation work to prepare the
Founder's Library as a public display area in the long-term
development plans for the Museum.Contribution to publications will
be encouraged.

Candidates should have a relevant qualification in book conservation
or have equivalent experience and be working towards professional
accreditation through ICON.  Further, candidates should possess
sufficient breadth and depth of knowledge of bound printed book and
manuscript material, and of the techniques used in their
conservation.  A current, demonstrable and practical track record of
experience with bound material, preferably in collections comparable
to those in the Fitzwilliam Museum and the Wren Library, is
critical.

Highly effective communication and influencing skills, both written
and oral, coupled with the skill of communicating complex specialist
information to colleagues at all levels are required as is the
confidence to deliver of a range of outreach requirements e.g.
lunch-time talks, behind-the-scene tours to a wide range of
audiences to colleagues at all levels and to a wide range of
audiences.

A high degree of IT literacy is essential and experience with
integrating conservation content into a museum collections
management system is important.

Offers of employment will be conditional upon the satisfactory
outcome of a Security check.  Whether an outcome is satisfactory
will be determined by the University.
