Subject: Positions at Antarctic Heritage Trust
Conservators to work in Antarctica (4 positions) The Antarctic Heritage Trust is a New Zealand based charity recognised internationally as the organisation which cares for the expedition bases associated with the famed polar explorers Captain Robert Falcon Scott, Sir Ernest Shackleton, Carsten Borchgrevink and Sir Edmund Hillary. Built between 1899 and 1957, the five expedition bases are located in the Ross Sea region of Antarctica. The expedition bases contain a combined total of approximately 20,000 artefacts consisting of objects made from a range of materials including timber, leather, paper, glass and metal. Since 2006, the Trust has managed a world leading, long term, staged, international heritage conservation project to ensure the bases and associated artefact collections remain for the benefit of the international community. It has been described as one of the most exciting conservation projects in the world. Over the years 2016-17, the Trust will be conserving approximately 1000 artefacts from Borchgrevink's 1899 expedition base at Cape Adare. Due to its remote location, artefacts will be shipped to New Zealand, where conservation treatments will be carried out in the Canterbury Museum conservation lab. Subject to confirmation of funding, a shorter period of conservation work is scheduled for the artefact collection associated with Sir Edmund Hillary's 'A' Hut (part of the original Scott Base, and still positioned onsite in Antarctica). Work on those artefacts will take place at the Trust's conservation lab facilities in Antarctica. The Trust is now calling for applications seeking four conservators to work in both Christchurch, New Zealand and Antarctica. Because of the short term and specific nature of the contract, applicants are required to have fluent written and spoken English. Due to the range of artefacts requiring conservation, specialisms may differ between contracts. Successful applicants will be employed by the Trust on a Fixed Term Agreement. A salary, together with travel to and from New Zealand or Antarctica, will be paid by the Trust. Note that not all positions involve travel to Antarctica. For those positions where travel to Antarctica is required, medical and psychometric testing must be passed, the New Zealand Government must approve participants travel to Antarctica and travel will be subject to proven work performance and suitability throughout the work programme in New Zealand. A valid work visa must also be procured by candidates for any of the positions below. Applications for all vacancies close at midnight on Sunday 20 December 2015 (NZ time). Due to Antarctic logistics and operations please note these dates may be subject to change. The Antarctic section of the project at Sir Edmund Hillary's Hut is subject to confirmation of funding, New Zealand Government approval, medical clearance, proven skills and suitability whilst working in New Zealand.
