Subject: Travertine fragments
Have any conservators had successful experience of pinning/dowelling large travertine 'Egyptian alabaster' fragments? Due to the brittle and crystalline nature of the stone, as well its condition, conventional drilling methods are highly risky. The fragments are large (sections from colossal statues) so a system of dowelling the joins is necessary. Any advice from other conservators who have experience of working with this stone, and pinning it would be appreciated.
