Subject: Workshop on mirrors and flat glass
Workshop "Mirrors and flat glass" University of Amsterdam 1-4 February 2016 This course is designed to offer participants an opportunity to review their existing knowledge of glass conservation and to acquire an insight into the problems and solutions involved in the conservation of flat glass and mirrors. The workshop is aimed at those with knowledge of glass conservation who wish to gain information on the conservation of decorative flat glass and mirrors. However furniture, metal and glass conservators may also be involved in the care and preservation objects of which one element is flat glass. Awareness of the main concerns and priorities of these different specialists will facilitate decision making. We recognize that the conservation of mirrors takes place in a variety of contexts and conditions, from the conservation studio to on-site conservation within a historic house. We also need to consider how the conservation treatment of the object will differ according to the role of the object. With the aid of case histories the course will offer appropriate solutions where for instance a remedial treatment might be used, or other occasions when a full restoration is required. Participants will have a chance to examine a range of approaches. Planning and preparation are, of course essential for the conservator. We will therefore look at the management of a project, from the individual piece of work to large scale site activity. The workshop is given in the Ateliergebouw, one of the locations of the University of Amsterdam. The participation fee is 675 euros.
