The Conservation and Scientific Research Department is looking to
recruit a Conservator to act as lead conservation liaison for
British Museum collection storage moves, collaborating with
colleagues in the Department and stakeholders across the museum, in
particular the Collection Services, Curatorial and Operations
Departments.

Key areas of responsibility:

    To act as the lead conservation liaison and coordinator for
    collection storage move projects.  This will involve
    collaborating with and advising colleagues and stakeholders on
    conservation, preventive conservation and collection care
    matters regarding collection move projects.  At this time, the
    primary move project is that of the Africa, Oceania and Americas
    (AOA) collection.

    To lead, line manage, motivate and develop a team of currently
    two AOA collection move conservators and one preventive
    conservator.

    To independently solve complex problems regarding the storage
    and care of the collection, applying a high degree of expertise,
    judgment, innovation and adaptability and, where applicable,
    negotiate the resulting decisions with peers and stakeholders.

    To ensure delivery of the conservation and preventive
    conservation contribution to collection storage move projects to
    agreed standards and deadlines.

    To evaluate the risks to objects during handling, packing,
    integrated pest management measures, transport and storage, and
    the different options for the conservation of objects in
    preparation of these measures.

    To independently assess condition and carry out all aspects of
    interventive and passive conservation on a wide range of objects
    primarily made of organic and also inorganic materials, for
    transport to and re-housing in new storage facilities at the
    World Conservation and Exhibition Centre (WCEC) or elsewhere.

Person Specification: The successful candidate will have a
recognised professional conservation qualification to degree level,
with post-graduate training in materials conservation desirable.
The post holder must have excellent practical skills in the
conservation of organic materials with good knowledge of the
conservation of inorganic materials.  In addition they must have
considerable post-qualification experience of working in the museum
sector with a range of objects made from organic and inorganic
materials.  Strong evidence of workflow planning is essential, along
with excellent problem-solving and decision-making skills, and the
ability to work collaboratively whilst leading and motivating a
team.  It is desirable that the successful candidate has had
previous experience with collection storage work or with moving and
re-housing a collection to new storage facilities.
