Assistant Conservator
Fitzwilliam Museum

Fixed Term six month contract 1 January - 30 June 2016

The Fitzwilliam Museum was founded by the bequest of Richard, 7th
Viscount Fitzwilliam in 1816 and opened to the public in 1848.Today,
it houses over half a million works of art and antiquities from four
continents spanning a period of four thousand years in which most,
if not all, major civilisations are represented. The Museum and its
staff are known internationally for excellence in research,
exhibitions and public engagement. As well as being the principal
museum of the University of Cambridge, and both a centre and
resource for research and teaching within the University, the
Fitzwilliam Museum is the largest cultural venue in the East of
England region, welcoming around 500,000 visitors a year.It is also
the lead partner of the University of Cambridge Museums (UCM), a
partnership of eight University Museums and the Botanic Garden.

As part of its bicentenary celebrations in 2016, the Fitzwilliam
Museum will present a major exhibition 'Death on the Nile:
Uncovering the Afterlife of Ancient Egypt' (23 February to 22 May
2016). Within the gallery there will be a 'live' conservation
space, where visitors will be able to find out more about the
examination, analysis and conservation of ancient Egyptian funerary
material, can have a close look at examples and talk to a
conservator about the objects and processes.

You will help with the installation and de-installation of the
exhibition. During the run of the exhibition you will assist the
Head of Conservation and Conservator of Antiquities in the
presentation of specialist information to visitors about
examination, analysis and conservation of ancient Egyptian funerary
material. This will take place mostly in the gallery conservation
studio, where there will also be an ongoing conservation project.
The role will undertake these duties in rotation with the Head of
Conservation and Conservator of Antiquities. The rota will include
Saturdays and Sundays.

You will hold a relevant qualification in objects conservation (or
equivalent experience) and professional accreditation through ICON
(or working towards achieving this).

You will demonstrate sufficient practical conservation and technical
examination experience to carry out the duties. Experience of the
examination and conservation of ancient Egyptian collections highly
desirable, but specific training for the project will be provided.

Very importantly you will have the ability to communicate in a
lively and engaging way with the wide range of audiences interested
in and served by the Museum.

Offers of employment will be conditional upon the satisfactory
outcome of a Security check. Whether an outcome is satisfactory
will be determined by the University.
