Conservator Toronto Public Library Permanent Part-time 14 Hours per week Week 1 and Week 2: Mon. 9 am - 5 pm, Tue. 9 am - 5 pm The Toronto Public Library seeks a part time, permanent conservator to work in Preservation Services at the Toronto Reference Library located at 789 Yonge Street in downtown Toronto, Ontario, Canada. Posting number: 15-444EXT Salary: $35.50 - $40.10 per hour (2015 Rates) Closing date: October 27, 2015 Job summary: Reporting to the designated supervisor, is responsible for carrying out conservation treatment, exhibition preparation and preventive care measures necessary for the maintenance of a comprehensive preservation programme. Duties: Co-operates/consults with and advises staff regarding collection treatment alternatives, curatorial considerations, and the use, storage and exhibition requirements of library materials Contacts other libraries and conservation/preservation agencies as required Develops familiarity with needs of public service departments and their users in order to provide timely and appropriate service Undertakes analytical tests and performs technical examinations on library materials to evaluate physical composition, method of manufacture, condition, solubility of media, etc., so as to determine and recommend appropriate conservation treatments Conducts treatments on library materials including cleaning, stabilization, tape/stain removal, repair, mounting, matting, construction of storage enclosures, etc. using scientific knowledge, technical procedures, artistic sensibility, manual skills, and professional judgment Documents in written, automated and photographic form, condition of library materials and conservation treatments undertaken Prepares library materials for exhibition. Assists in the installation and take-down of exhibits, security and environmental conditions for exhibited collections Maintains standards of treatment quality according to established policy and procedures Actively participates in planning for the lab and recommends improvements to work flow and procedures Researches and tests new conservation materials, techniques and conservation storage materials Assists with lab maintenance and inventory activities Assists in the maintenance of preventive conservation measures for library collections Compiles statistical data and prepares reports Provides training for department staff and public service departments and participates in preservation education and outreach activities Answers enquiries from staff, other institutions and public concerning preservation Keeps up-to-date with developments in book and paper preservation techniques/technologies and maintains an awareness of professional developments Performs other related duties as may be assigned Qualifications: University Degree or post-secondary diploma in Book and/or Paper Conservation, plus a minimum of three years or progressive relevant work experience OR Equivalent combination of education and experience related to the job responsibilities Understanding and appreciation of the philosophy of public service to all, in accordance with human rights legislation and the principles of equity and access in the delivery of library service Familiarity with Canadian Association for Conservation Code of Ethics and Guidance for Practice, and demonstrated knowledge of safe and appropriate use of lab equipment, tools and chemicals Effective organizational skills, written and oral communication skills, and ability to work to deadlines essential Demonstrated initiative, sound judgement and problem-solving skills Ability to establish and maintain effective professional relationships at all levels Physical stamina consistent with lifting and moving quantities of heavy material To apply, e-mail your cover letter and resume, quoting the Job Posting number to recruitment<-at->torontopubliclibrary<.>ca.
