AGFA Magnetonband

As intern at the central institute for sound and audiovisual
heritage (ICBSA) in Rome, I am involved in the digitization of a
collection of AGFA Magnetonband PE 31G and PE 40G (1/4 inch tape
wound in a continuous loop around a single hub).  Does anyone know
this type of magnetic recording?  Any information about the
functioning of the recorder and the number of tracks on tape would
be useful.
