Subject: Lecture in Picasso
"Picasso in two minds: the revelations of X-radiography" Robing Room, Freemason's Hall 60 Great Queen Street London WC2B 5AZ Tuesday, 3 November 2015 Talk by Elizabeth Cowling, Honorary Fellow in History of Art at Edinburgh University During the First World War, Picasso extensively revised many of his canvases, radically altering their subject matter as well as their compositions, and sometimes switching from one style to another. Using the evidence of X-rays and studio photographs, Elizabeth Cowling will examine representative cases, and discuss the context and likely reasons for Picasso's exceptionally experimental approach at this watershed in his life and career. She will argue that collaboration between art historians and conservators represents the best hope for understanding these fascinating but problematic pictures. Elizabeth Cowling is Honorary Fellow in History of Art at Edinburgh University. Among her publications are Picasso: Style and Meaning (2002) and Visiting Picasso: the Letters and Notebooks of Roland Penrose (2006). She has co-curated several major exhibitions, including Picasso: Sculptor/Painter (1994), Matisse Picasso (2002-3) and Picasso Looks at Degas (2010-11). Her next exhibition, Picasso Portraits, opens at the National Portrait Gallery in October 2016. Freemasons Hall is close to both Covent Garden and Holborn Tube Stations.
