"Monumental Treasures: Preservation and Conservation" IIC Nordic Group conference Helsinki 21-23 October 2015 The Nordic Association of Conservators, Finnish section, IIC Nordic Group (Nordiska konservatorfarbundet rf - Pohjoismainen konservaattoriliitto ry) warmly welcomes you to the Monumental Treasures - Preservation and Conservation congress in Helsinki on 21-23 October 2015. This international congress is held every three years and is the main event for heritage conservation professionals in the Nordic countries. Over the three days there will be presented 30 different conservation and restoration projects, which are implemented in architecture, buildings, sculptures, works of art, archaeological finds, and textiles comprehensively on different types of cultural heritage objects and ensembles. Excursions: In the center of Helsinki we will visit the newly restored Presidential Palace. The visit is guided by a representative from the Presidential Palace and the conservators who did the extensive restoration and conservation work. Another visit will be made to the National Library of Finland, where the restoration works are still in progress. Here, too, conservators will lead visitors in seeing the various stages of the on-going work. A slightly different perspective on conservation can be seen at the Seurasaari Open-Air Museum, where the conservators will explain how the wooden buildings are maintained. Also of interest is Tamminiemi Museum, home of former president Urho Kekkonen. A restoration was carried out there between 2009-2012. The challenge there was how to preserve the modern-day paint layers in an old building. A completely different destination is Hietaniemi Cemetery, where we will hear about the preservation of the grave monuments. This visit is guided by a conservator who has been conducting research on the subject. The last excursion destination is the Paimio Sanatorium, designed by Alvar Aalto. Paimio is a 1.5 hour bus trip west of Helsinki. The Alvar Aalto Foundation received a grant from the Getty Foundation for the preservation of the Paimio sanatorium in 2014. The visit is guided by Jonas Malmberg from the Aalto Museum. In addition to the maintenance of the building there will be the possibility to discuss the ethical issues of the original furniture. These excursions link closely to the Congress program, which is available on our website. The content of the presentations can be found by clicking on its name. The versatile program discusses conservation values, choices we make, cooperation and technical conservation solutions. Opening and final speeches are given by ICCROM's Professor Jukka Jokilehto and the IIC (International Institute for Conservation of Historic and Artistic Works) President Sarah Staniforth. The price includes lunches, visits and the Congress publication. On the opening day there is an evening banquet at Hakasalmi Villa "Music!" exhibition, so bring along your dancing shoes. The program, prices and registration form can be found on our website. The Congress language is English.
